Research strengths

Exceptional breadth and depth across IT

The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) covers the whole IT spectrum from Engineering to Social Science. Our leading researchers' specific strengths are in: computing science, software engineering, information systems, and information and knowledge management.

IT research has a multi-disciplinary, multi-campus and multi-national approach, providing Monash with a unique capacity to reach out further and deeper than any other institution in Australia.

Our Research Centres provide the focus for our internationally recognised research strengths in intelligent systems, distributed systems and software engineering, organisational and social informatics, business intelligence and multimedia computing, and are the hubs of our research networks. Faculty researchers are engaged in many diverse projects, categorised under the Faculty's research priorities

As a Faculty of Information Technology we combine strengths across IT fields and leverage the collective knowledge into a wide variety of applications across disciplines. We are the largest IT Faculty in Australia and one of the leading and most respected and extensively collaborative IT institutions in the world.

eResearch

Monash leads the way in eResearch and in the development of eResearch infrastructure. FIT plays a major role with relevant research strengths in high performance computing, grid computing, data mining, computational modelling, digital repositories and digital curation, and collaborative platforms and environments.

The Faculty is renowned for its Nimrod software, a family of tools that support eResearch. Nimrod has been deployed nationally on the APAC Grid (now under the management of VPAC) and also in leading research sites in USA, UK, South America and Europe.

FIT performs collaborative eResearch with international leaders such as the Oxford e-Research Centre, the San Diego Supercomputing Center, California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology and the University of Amsterdam.

A major strategic advantage is the collaboration between the Monash eResearch Centre, FIT and expert professionals in Monash’s IT Services Division and the University Library who have led the ARROW, DART and ARCHER initiatives, funded by the Australian Government's Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). A key driver is providing eResearch infrastructure for the Synchrotron.
