FIT5194 Computer based global project management - Semester 2, 2015

This unit together with FIT5057 provides a holistic approach to project management. The emphasis of this unit is on theoretical foundation of project management in global environment, and adequate level of understanding of skills necessary for people to be involved in and managing projects globally. The practical exercises and relevant case studies will familiarize students with as many of current issues/problems/solutions as possible, and thus increase their ability to recognize the potential pitfalls in managing projects globally and provide appropriate solutions for them.

Workload Requirements

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • Two hours of lectures
  • One 2-hour tutorial

(b.) Study schedule for off-campus students:

Off-campus students generally do not attend lecture and tutorial sessions, however should plan to spend equivalent time working through the relevant resources and participating in discussion groups each week.

(c.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • A minimum of 8 hours independent study per week for completing tutorial and project work, private study and revision.

  • Assessment task 1
    Title:
    Investigating the foundation concepts of Global Project Management & Practice Models in Enterprises
    Description:
    This is an individual assignment, requiring a report style response.

    Each student will conduct a survey of literature on the foundation concepts of global project management and practice models to critically address the underpinning questions specified in the assignment brief.

    The student is expected to investigate relevant topics covered in weeks 1 to 4 and write a research evidence based report response (between 2,500 to no more than 3,000 words). Details of assignment 1 will be published in Moodle, including a marking guide.

    This individual assignment addresses learning outcomes 1 to 3 and 5.
    Weighting:
    25%
    Criteria for assessment:

    Criteria to be used include:

    • Justification on selection of the type of published articles
    • Discussion of the chosen and relevant information relating to topics in week 1 to 4
    • Quality of the written individual report.

    A detailed marking rubric will be published in Moodle.

    Due date:
    First Tuesday in teaching week 5, by 4 pm
    Remarks:
    Assignment 1 is to be submitted online, via Moodle. If the due date is a public holiday, the next working day becomes the due day for assignment submission.
  • Assessment task 2
    Title:
    Investigating the implementation and future trend of Global Project Management & practice developments in enterprises
    Description:
    This is a group assignment, requiring a report style response. Each group is to consist of 3 to 4 students.

    Students will:
    • conduct a survey of literature on the implementation and future trend of global project management and practice development in enterprises;
    • critically respond to the underpinning questions specified in the assignment brief.
     

    Students are expected to investigate topics covered in weeks 1 to 12 and write a research evidence based report response (between 4,000 to 5,000 words). Details of the report based assignment 2 will be published in Moodle, including a marking guide.

    This assignment addresses all the learning outcomes 1 to 5.

    Each student in the group will be award the same score given to the group assignment. In the event of a group dispute regarding performance issues, the tutor will decide final allocation of marks, based on peer review forms provided by the disputing group.

    Group Work Management Guidelines

    Students in each group are expected to develop a work-plan, which will clearly indicate the breakdown and allocation of work tasks and timelines; and an agreed approach for self managing performance issues and conflicts in the group. This work-plan must be completed by week 7 and handled to tutors in class, who will use the information to help oversee students' assignment progress. 

    In the event of failed self management of performance issues or conflicts in a group, each student will conduct a peer review of the other students' contribution using  FIT's  peer review form (http://intranet.monash.edu.au/infotech/resources/staff/group-guidelines/peer-review-contribution-form.html). The forms are to be given to the tutors (no later by the due assignment submission date), who will make the appropriate decision to allocate the appropriate marks to all students in the group.
